That's something I used to forget; I do not forget that nowadays.. Getting permission is also something grand. I've found that UK museums are more open to photography and even tripods (when asked). However, and I'm sorry here, your point #5 is incorrect. Raising ISO does NOT increase image noise. Raising ASA in camera film did increase grain, but that's comparing apples and shoes.

When you increase ISO, you are better displaying the noise that low light generates. It's the low light upon the sensor that creates noise. To lower noise, either open up your shutter or increase the exposure time.

For many years, I'd have dreadful museum images until I started leaving my camera on AUTO ISO, opened my shutter up, and increased my shutter time as much as possible.

Glad you opened with “check the rules”. Here’s my little parable about that. Years ago when wireless flashes for SLR film cameras first appeared, I took some to the Baltimore Aquarium, suction-cupped them to a promising tank of fish, and proceeded to take a lot of great closeups. Never bothered to ask anyone if this was okay. In fact, curious staff members came by and asked with interest about the equipment. They complimented me on my creativity, and wished me good luck! I then went on to have similar experiences at a few more zoos and aquaria….Which led me to believe that all such exhibits welcome photographers with flashes. Big mistake! On a trip to Chicago a few years later, I casually hooked up my flashes to a tank at the Shedd Aquarium— and got kicked out of there so fast, my head is still spinning. Tried to negotiate with the director, offered to make a donation, share my photos with the aquarium—not interested. They were very concerned about flashes startling the fish, and my argument that plenty of other aquaria permit flash photography didn’t, shall we say, hold much water. Lesson learned. Now I check websites in advance of visiting to see if there are any photo prohibitions. P.S.: the day in Chicago was not a total loss; walked across the street to the Field Museum of Natural History, where everything on display is dead and pretty much impervious to flash.

That’s a good call, as a kid I remember going to the natural history museum in London as a birthday treat and I loved it. It’s an amazing set of buildings, and the dinosaur exhibits are incredible there.

Hi Simon, I am a sucker for Natural History museums… just love going to them so like photographing them. The Natural History museum in London is probably my favourite place.
