The reason being is that I can retroactively apply any other WB after the fact but, at least with my Canon cameras, the image has to be shot with CWB to use it. So I'll often shoot towards my main light source with a diffuser over the lens and set the CWB. If I don't like the result, I've lost nothing. I can still set WB to anything else in raw conversion. But if I don't use CWB when shooting, that option is no longer on the table in post.

I really like the way the author Andrew layed out the subject of advance composition with visual examples and why gesture, punctuation is important to the overall outcome. Actually its like five article in one, all need to be read carefully. I already know a little on the elements of compositions (line, tone, colour, form/volume, etc) to make images interesting but now I feel I can make them even better. Thank you.

I started a whole youtube channel just devoted to composition called the Composition Madhouse: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_Wk8KiVWINxrAXJb0aHw6A. I love if you could check it out.

Spot metering etc is something that a photographer can move on to once the basics have been mastered and I speak from my own experience. There is no point getting absolutely spot on exposures if you haven’t mastered composition.
It may have been beneficial to also include some examples of leading lines/ diagonal composition and other examples to show that the rules can be broken, and still achieve stunning images.

When shooting digital you only have a reflective meter in the camera so it’s essential to understand your camera’s different metering modes and now to apply them to get the best exposure.

Or you can try and “fix it in post” which is one of the most irritating phrases in photography, IMHO.

Took me years before even trying spot metering, can make a big difference in complex shadowed or backlit compositions – flowerbeds, woods, some urban scenes. Now it’s something I think of along with exposure comp. There’s almost no discussion of it in all these little online blogs.

Disagree strongly. Instead, learn about your metering modes and what they do. In addition, learn how to use exposure compensation and apply it correctly in situations when they are needed.
