The window should be on the side of the subject. Now have the subject turn slightly to the window. You should position the camera so you are facing in front of the subject. Now take an exposure meter reading of the subject. Let’s say 1/60 @ f/5.6. The window is the main source of light. Look at the shadow on the person’s face. Set the flash for fill and aim the flash head at the ceiling. You don’t have to tell the flash half or quarter the brightness because the flash is being bounced off the ceiling or wall which absorbs some light. The flash will lighten the shadow, but not eleminate the shadow. It’s like loop or Rembrant lighting.

Find out what your camera can do only with the natural light. Then, when you have learned all the limitations of natural light, go buy a flash and begin to discover what that can add to your work. Than again I still don’t have an external flash, so I don’t know if my advice is good or helpful :-/

Off camera flash refers to a flash that is off the camera…. so not attached on top of it

That’s what I was thinking too. I always thought “off camera flash” referred to a flash unit.

A camera flash bracket will help.
