While one can sharpen blurry images during a post-processing stage, it’s always better to work on it while shooting.

Thank you for breaking it down in detail and especially explaining shutter speed, aperture, and ISO in relation to each other.

Is there a recommended resource to clean the lens myself? It’s virtually unusable in its current condition.

Looking at the example, I think in the situation and context of that photo, the way the tripod is set up with the feet making a stable base at the bottom and the centre column extended is the easiest way to photograph the scene. It would be extremely awkward to extend the legs in this environment.

Many lenses lose focus when zoomed. You received poor advice. An old practice was to focus on the subject, then recompose the image and shoot. But with modern cameras that is often not necessary any more (although I still do that in portrait and wedding situations).

Center columns should only be extended as a last resort. A tripod with its center column extended is far less stable and much more prone to vibrations.

Also, a lot of people use zoom lenses which is okay, but remember their apertures aren’t as encompassing as a prime lens which means you might not be able to dial in the aperture that would be the best in the situation.

Is this something you recommend? It sounds a bit complicated and takes time but wondered if it was worth trying? Great article. I will definitely try to put my lens at f stops higher than f5.6 for a family shoot I’m doing and will see how it goes. Worried more about the light at 9AM in the morning and having to up my ISO and using a faster shutter speed because of wiggling children!
